Can I use a free VPN to get a Korean IP address?

Although there are plenty of free VPNs and “free proxies” out there, it’s worth considering how these providers can afford to offer their service at no charge. If a free VPN or free proxy service is malicious, there are many ways for it to monetize your internet traffic, including logging and selling your browser history, injecting targeted ads and spam into your browser, or even recording usernames and passwords.

Are free VPNs safe?

To ensure a fast, private, and secure connection for every customer, ExpressVPN pays for a network of high-performance server locations in 94 countries. Skilled developers and designers optimize ExpressVPN’s apps and create privacy-related features such as Threat Manager.

Internet restrictions in South Korea: KCSC

Although the South Korean internet is relatively free and open, the government does engage in some censorship through its regulatory body, the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC).

There is no official list of blocked websites in South Korea. However, in 2021 the KCSC reported that it blocked 118,735 websites for various legal and moral reasons.
In addition to blocking websites directly, the KCSC also reserves the right to order Korean internet service providers to remove content deemed inappropriate. ISPs that do not comply with takedown requests may receive heavy fines.

Online surveillance is also an issue for many in South Korea, with the National Intelligence Service (NIS) able to monitor citizens’ personal communications without oversight thanks to a 2016 anti-terrorism law. And although warrants are required for the NIS to access the content of a suspect’s communications, metadata and communication logs can be requested from ISPs without a warrant.

For these reasons, many visitors to (and residents of) South Korea rely on their VPN to keep their internet traffic private and secure.
